Red Velvet Cake

Cake:
½ cup shortening
1 ½ cups sugar
2 eggs
1 ounce red food coloring
2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk
2 ½ cups flour (minus 2 Tbsp.)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. vinegar
2 tsp. baking soda
Icing:
5 Tbsp. flour
1 cup milk
1 cup butter or shortening
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Cream together shortening, sugar, and eggs. Then add food coloring and cocoa powder. Next add salt, buttermilk and flour. Then fold in vanilla, vinegar and baking soda. Place in greased 8” round cake pans and bake at 350° for 30 minutes. When done remove from pans and cool completely.
Icing: Cook flour and milk until smooth. Then cool. In a separate bowl cream together butter or shortening, powdered sugar and vanilla. Then add flour mixture. Frost cakes.
